The Paradox of Living in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway Abstract As one of the most prominent literary figures of British High Modernism, Virginia Woolf’s novels explore the predicament of modern existence and present a series of existential paradoxes of modern people. In other words, many critics fail to discuss the role that Septimus plays in Mrs. Dalloway’s life. This article, by analyzing the contradictory states of being of Mrs. Dalloway and Septimus and the link between them, is aimed to interpret the paradox of living illustrated in Mrs. Dalloway, which can be defined as the painfulness of living and the fear of death. Finally, Mrs. Dalloway and Septimus struggle to defend their self-worth and self-dignity in different ways. Key words: Paradox; link; self-dignity Introduction Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is a famous modern female British novelist, critic and prose author.
