Unit 1 Sentence Completeness Goals 1. Learn the parts of a sentence. 2. Be able to write complete sentences. Most written work is made up of sentences. A sentence is a grammatical unit that is syntactically independent and has a subject that is expressed. If you want to write well, you should learn to write correct sentences. In this unit, your task is to learn the parts of sentences and to write complete sentences. About the parts of a sentence, please remember the following tips: 1. A sentence always has a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE. The subject is the person or thing performing the action while the predicate is the action itself. 2. A PHRASE (two or more words in sequence that form a syntactic unit that is less than a complete sentence) can be added to a sentence without changing the SUBJECT and PREDICATE pattern. 3. Meanwhile, a CLAUSE (a group of words containing a subject and a predicate and forming part of a compound or complex sentence) can be added to a sentence. Both the clause and the phrase are MODIFIERS (a word, phrase, or clause that limits or qualifies the sense of another word or word group.). Sample 1 SUBJECT PREDICATE The dogs bark. The black dogs bark loudly. The dogs on the street bark all night. The dog led by its master barked at the girl. The dog that has sharp teeth barked at the child. To make a sentence correct, you should meet at least these standards: 1. It should be complete in structure. 2. It should begin with a capital letter. 3. It should end with a full stop, or an exclamation mark or a question mark. 4. It should express one complete idea. The following sentences are all correct: Sample 2 SUBJECT PREDICATE The teacher came. Michael Jordon is a good basketball player. The students use these dictionaries every day. He didnt know what had happened and was going to ask Mr. Smith, who was usually well informed. These sentences are correct because they are complete in structure: each has a subject and a pred
