As an essential part, culture contributes a lot to the development of the whole human evolution, let alone, nowadays it is a generally acknowledged measurement of overall national strength.Each nation is unique in its culture; however, the feverously competitive international situation and domestic motivation for further development require maintaining and carrying forward national cultures. Meanwhile the constantly increasing international exchanges and cooperation call for a good understanding of various world cultures. Moreover, China’s successful entry to WTO and bidding to be the host of 2008 Olympic Games put forward more tasks and challenges in front of us Chinese. Therefore, it’s of vital importance to study different world cultures.Culture, composed of countless elements, is hard to offer a clear-cut definition. However, it’s widely known that festival is a valuable component of culture, which gives us a perspective to have a good understanding of the complex matter. Western Valentine Festival and Chinese Double Seventh Festival occupy vital positions in their own cultures. As typical representatives of western and Chinese cultures respectively, they two certainly carry on with their ethnic cultural characters; on the other hand, they are similar to each other, to some extent, so that the communication of the two cultures can be carried out smoothly.The paper mainly analyzes the differences, as well as similarities between the two festivals, and it attaches enough importance to the hidden reasons for the differences, and pays special attention to western Valentine Festival’s greater popularity. And from the analysis such a conclusion is drawn that the coexistence of different cultures is unavoidable
