thearea.TherearenosurvivingrecordsofBookpurnongStationtotellushowor
whythehutgotitsname.Whentwogovernmentschosethesitefora
settlementinearly1894theyusedthisnameforthesettlement.
Agroupof40menandtheirwives,49singlemenand114youthsandchildrenhad
beenselectedtooccupytheLyrupsettlementandat8amonThursday22February,
1894thePSEllenarrivedattheLyrupriverbankwiththesettlersonboardandbasic
sofbuildingmaterialsandfarmingequipmentforthemtostarttheirnew
lifestyle.
ThesettlersgavethecaptainandcrewarousingcheerasthePSEllendepartedto
continueherjourneytoRenmark.Lyrupwasborn.Theconsiderableamountsofiron,
timber,ploughsandheavyitemswhichcouldnotbefittedontotheEllenweredelivered
thefollowingSaturdaybythePSGem.Oftheelevenvillagesettlementsestablishedin
1894LyrupistheonlyonewheretheVillageAssociationstillexists.Muchofthishas
todowiththesitingofthesettlementonrelativelyflatland,nottoohighabovetheriver
level,evenattimesoflowriver.Additionally,thesandyclaysoilaroundLyrupwas
moreproductivethantheshallowmalleesoilaroundmostoftheothersettlements。
