ManyscientistsbelievethattheMoonformedafteraplanetthesizeofMars,calledTheia,collided(碰撞)withtheEarth.Thiscausedmagmatoblastoutintospace.ThemagmacooledintosolidrocksthatstartedorbitingtheEarthinrings,likeSaturnhas.Gradually,thoserocksclumped(聚集)togethertoformtheMoon.;ScientistsworkedouthowoldtheMoonisbystudyingrocksgatheredfromthesurfacein1972—thelasttimehumanssetfootontheMoon.Astronautscollectedthesamplesusingalunarrake,draggingitthroughthedustonthesurfacetocollectrocksthatwerebetweenoneandthreecentimetreswide.Thesamplescontainedzirconcrystals,atypeofmineralthatwouldhaveformedaftertheEarthandTheiacollidedandthemagmacooleddown.Scientistshavestudiedthesamplesbeforebutanewscanningtechnique,called“atomprobetomography”，helpedthemtostudythecrystalsinmoredetailandcalculatetheMoonsagemoreaccurately.;TheMoonisimportantbecauseitaffectsthingsontheEarth,suchastides,seasonsandweather.LifeontheEarthwasonlypossibleaftertheMoonhadformed,soscientistswanttolearnmoreaboutwhenithappened.ProfessorPhilipHeck,whoworkedonthestudy,said,“Itsapartofournaturalsystemthatwewanttobetterunderstand.”
