Howcannonprofitsandnongovernmentalorganizations(NGOs)helpfarmorepeoplewhilekeepingtheirownorganizationsat

asustainablesizeandcost?In2014,TheBridgespanGroup’sJeffreyBradachandAbeGrindleexploredthisquestionin

“TransformativeScale:TheFutureofGrowingWhatWorks.”

Theyexaminedpathwaystodeliverimpactatascalethattrulymeetssignificantsocialneeds.

Adecadelater,wetakeanotherlookatpathwaysforsolvingsocialproblemsatscale.To

doso,wetappedintoBridgespanteammembers’experienceworkingwithnonprofitsandNGOsintheUnitedStates,Asia,andAfricatodevelopscalablestrategiestoaddresssocial

problems.Forthisupdate,weexaminedthestrategiesofapproximately80organizationsand

interviewedtheleadersof11oftheseorganizationsontheirjourneystoscaletheirimpact.

Thisarticleprovidesanupdatedguidetothepathways,orcorestrategycomponents,thatnonprofitsandNGOsusetodeliveroutsizedimpactonsocialproblemswhilekeeping

theirorganizations’sizeandgrowthmanageable.Wedidnotlookspecificallyathow

organizationsexpandtheirdirectservices—openingnewsites,servingmoreclients—

becausethistypicallyrequiresacorrespondingincreaseinsizeandcost.However,directservicegrowthcanhaveapowerfulimpactonsocialchange,particularlyasasourceof

organizations’credibilityandevidencebase.Indeed,evenasorganizationspursueoneormoreofthepathwaysidentifiedbelow,theymayalsocontinueorevenexpandtheirdirectserviceworktocreateevenmoreimpact.
