Everymorningat5am,whenmostpeopleareasleep,asinglefigurewouldbebusyinthekitchen,cookingmealsfortheneedyfolksofSingaporeuntiltherestofthevolunteersandthefourfull-timecooksarrive.Dayinanddayout,MrTonyTayandhisteamprepare,cook,packanddeliverthefoodtovariouspartsoftheisland.Thisteamofcaringvolunteersfromallwalksoflifeworktirelesslytobringasmiletothelessprivileged,bringingwarmthandkindnessintotheirlives.

Duringoneofhisvisitstocollectvegetablesanddistributethemtoaless-privilegedneighbourhood,hiswifenoticedthattheelderlyfolkdidnottakethevegetables.Uponaskingforthereason,onerepliedthatshecouldnotcookandthusonlyatethericedeliveredtoher.MrsTaythenofferedtocookforher,andthatsinglemealinitiatedWillingHearts,whichhassinceservednearly650,000mealsandcounting.

Sincetheorganisation’searlydays,volunteershavelearnedhowtocook,interactwithpeoplefromallwalksoflife,pickupdifferentlanguages,gaingreaterknowledgeaboutsocialissues,andmostimportantly,buildstrongbondswithoneanother.ThroughWillingHearts,MrTayhopestoexposetheyoungergenerationtothecountry’sbackyard,toallowthemtoseeandexperiencefirst-handwhatgoesonbehindcloseddoors.Thisistoencouragethemtobecomemorecompassionateindividualswhounderstandtheimportanceoftakingcareoftheelderly,andbeinspiredtofosterunitywithintheirownfamilies.Hisbestgiftduringthecourseofthisjourneyisseeinghowyoungervolunteershelpandfeedthelessprivileged.Onevolunteer,heproudlytellsus,hasbeeninspiredtostarthisownprogrammetohelptheneedy.

Asanon-profitorganisation,WillingHeartsreliesheavilyondonationsandfoodcollections.AlthoughthevolunteersatWillingHeartsmaybeasmallandirregulargroup,theyarealwaysonthelookoutforthepoortoextendtheirassistancetothem.
