    WhenIenteredgraduateschoolbackintheearly1980s,sociologicaltheoryoccupieda

    highlyambivalentpositioninthediscipline.Landmarkcontributionswerebeingmadebysocial

    thinkerssuchasGiddens,Bourdieu,Foucault,Touraine,Habermas,andGoffman;someoftheir

    writingswouldcometorankamongthegreattheoreticalworksofthesecondhalfofthetwentieth

    century.Feministtheoryalsowasontherise,aswereconflicttheory,neo-Marxism,culturaltheory,

    andawholehostofnewapproachesinmicrosociologyandsocialpsychology.Lookingback,itwas

    atimeofremarkabletheoreticalfermentandcreativity.Yetsociologicaltheoryalsohadabadname,

    inpartbecauseitwassowidelyidentifiedwiththeParsonianenterprise,whichbythenhadbecome

    decisivelyrepudiated.Americansociologistsinparticularwereeagertoput“grandtheorizing”in

    therear-viewmirror.Andforsomeitmeantputtingsociologicalinquiryofallsorts,structural-

    functionalistornot,intherear-viewmirror.“Idon’twastemytimetheorizing,”Irecallasenior

    professorinmydepartmentdeclaring.“I’mtoobusydoingresearchandfindingoutnewstuffabout

    thesocialworld.”

    Thatwasthreeandahalfdecadesago.Alothaschangedsincethen.Itoncemorehas

    becomeacceptable,perhapsevenfashionable,todosociologicaltheory—albeitinadifferentway,

    certainly,thanduringtheheydayofstructuralfunctionalism.Theacademicgenerationthatcame

    ofageduringthe1960sandthatisatthepeakofthedisciplinetoday—figuressuchasWright,Joas,

    Alexander,Swidler,Camic,Abbott,Somers,Burawoy,Calhoun,McAdam,Zelizer,Fligstein,

    DiMaggio,and(PatriciaHill)Collins—hasshownagreatenthusiasmfortheor
