Inanexceptionallychallengingyear,ourlatestFamilyBusinessSurveyclearlyillustratesthe

extraordinaryresilienceandagilityoffamilybusinessesintheMiddleEast.Whilemanyhavebeen

hithardbythepandemic,theyremainoptimisticthatgrowthwillreturninthecomingmonthsand

years,andarelookingforwardtothefuture.

Familybusinessesareanessentialdriverofeconomiesaroundtheworld.Theirconsiderable

contributiontoGDPandemploymentmeansthattheirhealthandresiliencemattersastheworld

recoversfromCOVID-19.Asthemosttrustedformofbusiness,accordingtotheEdelmanTrust

Barometer,theycanandshouldleadthewaytorecovery.

OursurveyshowsthatfamilybusinessesintheMiddleEasthaveclearprioritiesforthenexttwo

years.Topofthelistisdiversification,with58%planningtoexpandintonewmarketsorclient

segments,butdigitalcapabilitieswillalsobethekeytosuccessinthefuture.Whilemanyfamily

businesseshavehistoricallyunderinvestedindigital,thepandemichasaddedanewurgency

andthreequarters(75%)saythatdigital,technologyandinnovationinitiativesareakeypriority.

Thereare,ofcourse,risksaheadforallbusinesses.Forfamilybusinesses,oneofthebiggest

hazardsliesinfamilyrelationships.Inrecentyears,wehaveseenanincreaseinfamilyconflictsin

ourregion,althoughtherespectheldfortheoldergeneration,whilstalive,hashelpedtocontain

conflicttoanextent.ManyfamilybusinessesintheMiddleEastarealsoreachingacriticalstage

intermsofsuccession–secondgenerationfamilymembersarealreadymajorityshareholders
