ABSTRACT

Attemptstoexplaintheoriginanddiversificationofvertebrateshavecommonlyinvokedthe

evolutionoffeedingecology,contrastingthepassivesuspensionfeedingofinvertebrate

chordateandlarvallampreyswithactivepredationinlivingjawedvertebrates.Oftheextinct

jawlessvertebratesthatphylogeneticallyintercalatetheselivinggroups,thefeeding

apparatusispreservedonlyintheearlydivergingstem-gnathostomeheterostracans,andits

anatomyremainspoorlyunderstood.HereweuseX-raymicrotomographytocharacterise

thefeedingapparatusofthepteraspidheterostracanRhinopteraspisdunensis(Roemer,

1855).Weshowthattheapparatusiscomprisedofthirteenplatesarrangedapproximately

bilaterally,themajorityofwhicharticulatefromthepostoralplate,exceptthoseclosetothe

midlinewhichareshorterandmusthavef
