Insomewaystherehasneverbeenabettertimetopracticeradical
geography.Geographicalquestions,concerns,projectsarecentralto
debatesaroundcontemporarypolitics,economicsandculture.There
isagrowingsenseofoutrageabout—andoutrightoppositionto—
theinjusticesofcapitalistglobalisation,thespiralling“waronterror”,
thearroganceofneoliberalelites,theerosionofdemocraticand
progressiveinstitutionsandtheinequitiesandrepressionsofdailylife.
Conversationsaboutgeography,manyoftheminvolvinggeographers,
clearlyhaveaplaceintheformulationofemergingagendasforradical
change.
Moreover,wenowhaveadisciplinethatinmanyrespectsismuch
betterplacedtocontributetotheseongoingdebates.Geographershave
beengrapplingwithquestionsofunevendevelopment,theshifting
geometriesofpowerrelationsandthescopeforresistanceandpro-
gressivechangeformorethanthreedecades.Incontrasttothesituation
inthe1960s,whenalargelyintrospectiveandconservativediscipline
wastoooftenunresponsivetothemanifestpressuresforsocialand
politicalchange,geographyisnowbetterequippedtoengagewith
questionsofpower,andpolitics.Althoughthereisstillan
enormouswaytogoonthisfront,thedisciplineisnowmorediversein
social,genderandethnicterms.Encouragingly,weknowthereare
