Abstract

Variablespeedwindturbinesareextremelypowerfulpowerelectronicsapplications.Thispaper

introducesrecommendedsemiconductorvoltagefortheseapplicationsinrespectofefficiency,

reliabilityand

productioncosts.Theresultingstate-of-the-artsolutiontodayisthe1700Vsilicon.

Highpowerelectronicsapplicationsinmegawattrangesneednumerouspowersemiconductors.

However,eventhelargestsemiconductorsavailabletodayarestillnotpowerfulenoughforsome

applications.

Therefore,itisnecessarytoconnecttheminparallel.Theparallelconnectionofsemiconductor

devicesina

traditionalPEcircuitisverycommon.

Oneproposedsolutionispresentedhere:powerelectronicsassembly,IGBTbaseunits,containing

IGBTsdiodes,heatsinks,DClinkcapacitors,driversprotection,auxiliarypowersupplyandPWM

controller(oneindependentunit),arrangedintoathreephaseinverter.Suchunitscanbeconnected

inparallel,

forexample,fora4-quadrantdrivewindmillwithpermanentmagnetgeneratorandafull-size4MW

converter,

whichispresentedhere.

Thispaperdescribesamethodforobtaininghigherwindmillpowersinthemediumvoltagerange,

usinglineinterfaceconnectionofvariable-speed,medium-voltagePMgenerators,withoutany

restrictionsin

respectofvoltageandpower,andusingprovensemiconductorsandcomponents.

BasicPEunitsareconnectedinseriesforhighervoltages,andinparallelforhigherpowers.
