andsecondaryactivities.Allactivitieshavecostsandsuccessful

businessesorganiseandcarryouttheiractivitiesinsuchawaythatvalue

isadded.Itisthevalueaddedthatallowsrevenuestoexceedcostsso

thatprofitsaremade.

Toaddvalue,theorganisationmustbedoingmoreforitscustomersthan

simplycarryingoutthe‘facevalue’oftheactivities,otherwise

customerswouldpresumablycarryouttheactivitiesthemselves.

Customerseithercannotcarryouttheactivitiesatall,orcannotmatch

costs,ordon’twanttocarryontheactivitiesandsoarewillingtopay

otherstocarrythemoutinstead.Forexample:
