Howdoesitwork?Calibrationperformance
Pulseoximetryisasimplenon-invasivemethodofmonitoringthepercentageofhaemoglobin
(Hb)whichissaturatedwithoxygen.Thepulseoximeterconsistsofaprobeattachedtothe
patientsfingerorearlobewhichislinkedtoacomputerisedunit.Theunitdisplaysthe
percentageofHbsaturatedwithoxygentogetherwithanaudiblesignalforeachpulsebeat,a
calculatedheartrateandinsomemodels,agraphicaldisplayofthebloodflosttheprobe.
Audiblealarmswhichcanbeprogrammedbytheuserareprovided.Anoximeterdetects
hypoxiabeforethepatientbecomesclinicallycyanosed.
Howdoesanoximeterwork?Asourceoflightoriginatesfromtheprobeattwo
wavelengths(650nmand805nm).Thelightispartlyabsorbedbyhaemoglobin,byamounts
whichdifferdependingonwhetheritissaturatedordesaturatedwithoxygen.Bycalculatingthe
absorptionatthetwowavelengthstheprocessorcancomputetheproportionofhaemoglobin
whichisoxygenated.Theoximeterisdependantonapulsatileflowandproducesagraphof
thequalityofflow.Whereflowissluggish(eghypovolaemiaorvasoconstriction)thepulse
oximetermaybeunabletofunction.Thecomputerwithintheoximeteriscapableof
