ThefoundationofancientChineseagriculturewaslaiddownintheearlyNeolithic.AsregardstheoriginofancientChineseagriculture,themodeofproductionandthetypesofcrops,farmtoolsanddomesticatedanimalsallappear.

1．FoodCropsAbout75%ofChinascultivatedareaisusedforfoodcrops.RiceisChinasmostimportantcrop,raisedonabout25%ofthecultivatedarea.ThemajorityofriceisgrownsouthoftheHuaiRiver,intheYangtzevalley,theZhuJiangdelta,andinYunnan,Guizhou,andSichuanprovinces.

Wheatisthesecondmost-prevalentgraincrop,growninmostpartsofthecountrybutespeciallyontheNorthChinaPlain,theWeiandFenRivervalleysontheLoessplateau,andinJiangsu,Hubei,andSichuanprovinces.CornandmilletaregrowninnorthandnortheastChina,andoatisimportantinInnerMongoliaandTibet.

Othercropsincludesweetpotatoesinthesouth,whitepotatoesinthenorth,andvariousotherfruitsandvegetables.TropicalfruitsaregrownonHainanIsland,applesandpearsaregrowninnorthernLiaoningandShandong,andcitrusfruitsaregrowninSouthChina.

OilseedsareimportantinChineseagriculture,supplyingedibleandindustrialoilsandformingalargeshareofagriculturalexports.InNorthandNortheastChina,Chinesesoybeansaregrowntobeusedintofuandcookingoil.

Chinaisalsoaleadingproducerofpeanuts,whicharegrowninShandongandHebeiprovinces.Otheroilseedcropsaresesameseeds,sunflowerseeds,rapeseed,andtheseedsofthetungtree.
