M.J.Parkersustainedasecondfractureofthecontralateralhip.Patientspresentingwithasecond

fractureweremorelikelytobeinstitutionalised,female,older,andhavelowermobilityand

FromPeterboroughmentaltestscores.Therewasnosignificantdifferencweenthetwogroupswith

CityHospital,regardstothechangeinthelevelofmobilityorreturntotheiroriginalresidenceatoneyear

Peterborough,Unitedfollow-up.However,themortalityrateinthesecondfracturegroupwassignificantlyhigher

Kingdomatoneyear(31.6%vs27.3%,p=0.024).Intwothirdsofpatients,thesecondfracturewasin

thesameanatomicallocationasthefirst.Inananalysisof293patients,approximately70%

ofsecondfracturesoccurredwithinthreeyearsofthefirst.

Thisisthelargeststudytoinvestigatetheoutcomeofpatientswhosustainasecond

contralateralhipfracture.Despitethehighermortalityrateatoneyear,theoutcomefor

survivingpatientsisnotsignificantlydifferentfromthoseafterinitialhipfractures.

Eachyearabout76000patientssustainainvestigatetherelationshipofthesiteand

fractureofthehipintheUK1andbetweentimweenthefirstandsecondfractures.
