PAGE PAGE 25 On Differences between Chinese and American Space Language under Nonverbal Communication Perspective Abstract: Economic globalization makes the phenomenon of intercultural communication more and more universal. Proxemics belongs to the field of intercultural nonverbal communication, which is concerned with space language. People of different cultures have different attitudes, habits and values for space. In order to achieve successful and accurate intercultural communication and avoid embarrassing miscommunication, it’s important to study different space language. This paper comparatively analyzes Chinese and American space language through contrasting four aspects: territoriality, personal space, seating arrangements and furniture arrangements, and then reveals reasons that cause the differences. It helps people to clear communication barriers of proxemics and decrease cultural alienation, and also strengthen the understanding of two different cultures, therefore people can improve the ability of intercultural communication.
