Introduction 1.1 Brief introduction of Wordsworth William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was a noble English Romantic poet, an early leader of romanticism and ranks as one of the greatest lyric poets in the history of English literature. He was also one of the three great lake poets. The other two are Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. Wordsworth and Coleridge helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature. The Prelude (1800) was generally considered to be Wordsworth’s masterpiece, which is a semi autobiographical poem of his early years. From 1843 until his death, Wordsworth was the Poet Laureate. As a representative of nature poets, Wordsworth had a keen love of nature. A great number of his poems were about nature or the relationship between human beings and nuture. Percy Bysshe Shelley called him “a singer of nature”, and Dean Church once said, “Wordsworth was first and foremost a philosophical thinker, a man whose intention and purpose it was to think out for himself, faithfully and seriously, the questions concerning man and nature and human life” (as cited in Bradley, 1999, P. 129). 1.2 Introduction of research situation at home and abroad Many scholars at home and abroad have analyzed Wordsworth’s ideas and his poems. They have done their research from different perspectives. Hartman (2015) is undoubtedly an important figure among them, who has made great contribution to the study of Wordsworth.
