On Jane Eyre’s Rebellious Character— From a Feminist Perspective Abstract: Jane Eyre is the representative novel of Charlotte Bronte, a well-known critical realistic novelist in the 19th century. It depicts the life of Jane Eyre, the heroine, from an orphan to a mature woman. In Gateshead Hall, the unjust treatment on Jane Eyre awakens her rebellious consciousness. At Lowood, she feels sympathy for unfair treatment on Helen Burns, and has reflection on women’s fate which is a start for her feminist sprit. In Thornfield and at St. John’s home, Jane earns her bread to maintain economic independence, and to pursue sincere love and equal marriage. In these four stages of her life, Jane Eyre’s rebellious character enables her to hold different views from others, and to pursue equality in love and marriage. This paper analyzes Jane Eyre’s rebellious characteristic from a feminist perspective with her experiences in different stages of life.
