Her first novel The Joy Luck Club had been on New York Times best-seller list for forty weeks once it is published in 1989. The success of this novel cannot be separated from its unique techniques of narrative. This paper will analyze the different types of narrative strategy applied in The Joy Luck Club and explore the functions of them and the profound implicit meaning of the novel to reveal its remarkable power. Introduction 1.1 The introduction of author and her major works Amy Tan was born on February 19th in 1952 in California. Living in a Chinese － American immigrant family，she grew up in San Francisco where gathered large group of Chinese immigrants. Her mother had married before immigrating to the United States and left 3 other daughters in China before Tan was born. At her young age, Tan’s father and brother died of brain tumors. Later, Tan moved with her mother and other children to Switzerland and attended high school there. After that, Tan returned to United States and received an M. A. in English and linguistics in 1974 in San Jose State University. Tan’s special life experience has laid a foundation to her later career.
