Summary and Conclusions 3D CFD models with Fluent have been established to simulate the reverse flow catalytic converters. Both SZ and DZ models were validated against experimental data. Both models gave reasonable agreement with experimental data. The model was applied to investigate the methane light-off with inlet temperature variation in both reverse flow and unidirectional flow process. With the reverse flow operation, methane ignites with inlet temperature as low as 600 K. The higher the inlet temperature, the shorter the time required to light off methane. The light-off temperature is about 740 K and this does not change with inlet temperatures. Summary and Conclusions With the unidirectional flow operation, the minimum inlet temperature for methane light-off was 650 K. The higher the inlet temperature, the shorter the time required to light off methane. The light-off temperature varies with inlet temperature. The higher the inlet temperature, the lower the light-off temperature. Compared to the unidirectional flow operation, the time to achieve methane light-off with reverse flow process is about four times longer. Reverse flow should be only applied for methane ignition process when the inlet temperature is too low to ignite methane for the unidirectional operation.
