The total amount of force transmissible to the road surface decreases accordingly. This allows more lateral force to build up, which in turn translates to greatly improved cornering ability. Differentials are needed because the wheels on the outside of the curve have to travel a longer distance than the wheels on the inside of the curve. At the same time, the rear wheels have less distance to travel than the front wheels. The permanent all-wheel drive system, therefore, requires the use of a differential on the front and rear axles and an additional centre differential in between the two axles in order to eliminate stresses. Differential locks cancel this effect of the differentials. This means that forward thrust is ensured even if one axle or one wheel loses traction and starts to spin.
