Cultural Differences between Chinese and English Idioms Abstract: Idiom is a specific form of language or dialect of a people or country,whichcan reflect the living conditions and cultures.Idiom embodies the wisdom of thepeople, armed with a distinctive image,taken a strong ethnic color and local colorwhich showing a colorful image of the form and culture , reflecting the variousaspects of a national culture, including daily life, social customs, flora and fauna, andso on. Without idioms language would become dull and dry, whereas an appropriateuse of them in speech and writing will add much to variety strength and vividness ofthe language. Therefore idioms are widely used in almost all kinds of speeches andwritings: they can be found in literary works, in scientific and political articles; evendebates in the United Nations are often interspersed with idioms which become verbalweapons that are difficult to argue against. Thus an adequate translation of idioms isnot only helpful but also essential in intercultural communication for the importantposition that idiom hold in language use,.This paper attempts to make a briefcomparative study of the cultures embodied in Chinese and English idioms andexplores the role of the culture in understanding and rendering of both English andChinese idioms. There are various idioms both in Chinese andEnglish. The differences are significant. The main reason is that the idioms areculture-loaded. Language is a great part of culture, and idioms are considered as thecream of a language. Therefore culture is fully displayed in the images and emotionsof idioms.
