Example: Cantonese 3 CULTURAL CORNER French, ltalian, Portuguese and Spanish are sister languages, and speakers of these languages can sometimes understand each other. English belongs to the German, Dutch, Swedish family, but has a lot of words coming from French. All the languages mentioned are written in the Roman alphabet, which is a set of 26 letters. Greek and Russian have their own different alphabets. The numerals 1, 2, 3 and so on are Arabic numerals, which replaced the Roman ones, e.g. I, Il, Ill, which were difficult to use centuries ago.
