In the early of 1960s, he made the first new Dadalism sculpture with plaster and plastic bags. Subsequently he created a series of environmental sculptures. Claes Oldenburg’s unique specific image symbols made him become an important representative of pop Art. His environmental sculptures were formed in the tradition of Surrealism and Dadalism. They are famous because of their forms of theme. In The first part of the paper, the cultural background of Claes Oldenburg’s environment sculptures, the specific pop culture of America, the birth and the development process of pop art was discussed. In this part, the formation of Oldenburg’s artistic creation personality is introduced from infancy period, development period and maturity period. Demonstration shows that the Oldenburg’s art is rooted in the American consumer culture with distinctive color of pop art. In The second part of the paper, the features of environment sculptures sharp language of Oldenburg are analyzed from the creation theme and method. His creation themes are concluded to two kinds: food symbols and tool symbols, meanwhile, his methods are concluded to the material conversion and scaling conversation. Analysis showed that the Oldenburg’s works have deep philosophical thought, though they are easy and pellucid from their appearance. The thought is based on the digestion art and living limitation. Their works can be defined as post-modernism seriousness artistic creations. In the third part of the paper, the impact of Oldenburg’s environment sculpture methods is analyzed. First of all, the relationship of the environmental sculptures and urban public space is analyzed.
