Nowadays, we pay much attention to relieving stress. Through observing, we find that humors have an excellent effect on relaxation. Therefore, it is of high values to analyze humors and understand the secrets of humors in daily life. Language in TV series is the vivid embodiment of scenes of real life. Therefore, the research on the TV series’ language has important directive significance for our linguistic study. Recently, the American situation comedy The Big Bang Theory is increasingly popular across the world. It improves our life quality by bringing us a lot of laughs. This thesis will take The Big Bang Theory as an example and study some of the humorous discourses in it from the perspective of pragmatics. Two goals are attempted to reach in this thesis. On the one hand, we will analyze the verbal humor in the play and help people better appreciate the humor effects. On the other hand, we hope this thesis can enrich the study on verbal humor in situation comedies. This thesis consists of three parts. It firstly analyzes the humorous discourse in The Big Bang Theory with cooperative principle. Then, it analyzes the humorous discourse in The Big Bang Theory with speech act theory.
