Because of supporting multi-protocol, Metropolitan Area Transmission Network can provide a lot of service. With increase of services and transmission band, Metropolitan Area Transmission Network must be reliable, robust, and able to support multi-protocol and a variety of services ,operate on circuit scheduling and service management conveniently. With Metropolitan Area Transmission Network,telecommunication operator can enhance their advantage in competition, as well as operate on service conveniently, reduce their costing, add their profit, protect their investments. First of all, two important technologies ASON(Automatically Switched Optical Network) and MSTP(Multi Service Transmission Platform )will be discussed in this paper, standing for technology direction of Optical Transmission Network . The key technology of the third generation MSTP and interconnecting of MSTP, architecture of ASON will be emphasized, the application of MSTP and ASON in Metropolitan Area Transmission Network will be described, some question in new generation of Metropolitan Area Transmission Network will be listed. Characteristic of Transmission Network of 3G will be analyzed sequentially in needs of services, net interface, net architecture. Then a solution of Metropolitan Area Transmission Network will be provided: the best solution to build a future Transmission Network of 3G is by use of MSTP. With the development of Transmission Network, MSTP can be combined with Intelligence Optical Network closely.
