Mums asks if its normal for parents to bring other siblings to parties
As we all know, we cant invite everyone we know to our birthday parties, and as such we cant expect to score an invitation to everyone elses ... Its just how it is, some kids miss out.
Even siblings.
Is this a normal thing?
A mum has posted to parenting forum, Mumsnet, asking when people started inviting other siblings along to birthday parties.
Having a kids birthday party in a few Sundays time and quite a few of the rsvp’s have asked if siblings can come too, she wrote.
The party hosting mum asked if this was a normal thing and said she hadnt intended on catering for so many extra party guests.
When it came to responses online, they were varied.
Some said it was just plain rude to ask if you can bring along extra guests to a party.
If you don’t have childcare for the siblings it means you can’t go to the party, replied one.
I learnt to add no siblings to invites. Its unfair on the birthday child to have a host of extra people they didnt invite tagging on, added another.
Others responded with large families in mind that may not want to be separated on weekends.
Its about childcare. Its not cheeky, replied one person. Its a perfectly reasonable question.
I had to take the other sibling to parties a fair amount of time, 18mths difference, said another. Dp (darling partner) worked weekends and I have no alternative childcare. I always asked and said that they wouldnt expect food or a party bag.
Does it come down to cost?
One person said it was normal among her childrens peers to ask if siblings can tag along.
If its an event where you obviously have to pay per child the etiquette seems to be for the parent of the invitee to offer to pay for the sibling (and party host usually refuses), she said.
She also explained that in the case of parties in a hall or location that doesnt require a per head charge, its really only a few extra
