法律英语的语言特征及翻译原则 Linguistic Characteristics and Translation Principles of Legal English L Literature Review The study of legal English has a long history. English legal linguist Tiersma pointed that, once established, legal phrases in authoritative texts take on a life of their own; you meddle with them at you own risk. In 1992, Professor Cheng Zhongcheng published Translation Methods of Legal English, which discusses and provides lots of methods of legal English translation. In 1993, Chen Qingbai and Wang Jingxian translated An English-Chinese Dictionary^ of legal words, which completely embodied the achievements of legal English translation. IL Significance, emphasis, difficulty The safeguarding of the prosperity and development of our country need the perfection of legal system. Since China adopted the reform and open up policy, our countrys legal translation develop vigorously. To improve the legal system, we must translate and study lots of advanced foreign countries9 laws. To attract more foreigners9 to take a trip and invest in China, we must do the work of legal translation well. In addition, as the international contacts become increasingly frequent, we need keep abreast of more other countries9 laws. Especially after China entered into the World Trade Organization (WTO), legal translation will develop like a raging fire. Although during the past one or two decades, the practice of legal translation were more frequent than other periods in history, the study of legal translation is very rare. The bottom cause is that legal scholars and English scholars act on their own wills respectively without mutual coordination. On the one hand, legal scholars are not good at using language skills; on the other hand, language scholars lack understanding of laws. In view of the linguistic characteristics of legal English, this paper attempts to propose some translation principles of legal English. III.
