ABSTRACTABSTRACT ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Traditional district shows the traditional style and local characteristics of the city． Currently,the protection of traditional district seems to be common theme，but it seemed to be really appreciated．For public the awareness of the value of traditional district still confusing，although the large—scale reconstruction situation has improved，but still exists．And there is another trend“removing the really to build the faIse”． Traditional district is the place where people really lived there，traditional context is just its additional value，SO the protective behaviors not make it stop growing．but to put it forward．The protection and renewal of traditional district is the same with the new district design，both in meet with the actual needs of the situation to create and maintain its own characteristics，the only difference is that traditional district has the restriction of context continuation．Based this，this paper proposes to introduce“heterogeneous elements”to update traditional district，constantly removing outdated elements and adding modem elements based context continuation，which reflecting identifiability and the spirit of the times．This method let modem traces add with history traces show the development process of“tradition— now．future”． The process of urban development along with the application of heterogeneous elements，the of using heterogeneous elements to update traditional district also have，but the lack of systematic exposition．This article will be divided into four sections for detailed discussion．The first part firstly analyzes the development of the historical protection，then discusses the concept、elements，value of traditional district and the meaning of protection and renewal．The second part firstly discusses the concept of“heterogeneous elements”，then analyzes the used heterogeneous elements．The third part firstly discusses the theoretical basis of the application of heterogeneous elements in the protection and renewa
