5B091317 薛菊丽 Lao Zi 第八章：上善若水，水善利万物而不争。处众人之所恶，故几于道。居善地，心善渊，与善仁，言善信，正善治，事善能，动善时。夫唯不争，故无尤。Chapter8 The greatest virtue is like water. The goodness of water is that it benefits the ten thousand creatures; yet itself does not scramble, but is content with the places that all men disdain. It is this that makes water so near to the Way. And if men think the ground the best place for building a house upon, If among thoughts they value those that are profound, If in friendship they value gentleness, In words, truth; in government, good order; In deeds, effectiveness; in actions, timeliness- In each case it is because they prefer what does not lead to strife.And therefore does not go amiss. The greatest virtue is like water. Laozi compared his philosophy of non-action to water,to distinguish it from the jungle law. He said,Water nourishes everything but contends for nothing.(水善利万物而不争) Nothing in the world is weaker than water.Yet nothing is stronger than water when it comes to breaking something strong.(天下莫柔弱于水，而攻坚强者莫之能胜 ) Water is a typical example of the weak winning over the strong.Water is invincible because it desires nothing and contends for nothing. Water Water is the perfect substance according to Daoism. Water always seeks the lowest point and always takes the shape of any vessel into which it is poured. Water always flows downhill, and it always flows around any obstacle. Water seems to be the weakest substance, but it’s really the strongest. A steady drip of water can wear away a rock, a stream can create a canyon, a glacier (frozen water) can create a Grand Canyon, and water in the form of a hurricane or typhoon can erode the very continents away. 柔弱胜刚强。鱼不可脱于渊，国之利器不可以示人。 Gentleness overcomes strength: Fish should be left in the deep pool, And sharp weapons of the state should be leftWhere none can see them. 江海所以能为百谷王者，以其善下之，故能为百谷王。 How did the
