Introduction 　　Discourse analysis involves looking at both language form and functions and includes the study of both spoken interaction and written texts. It identifies linguistic features that characterize different genres as well as social and cultural factors that aid in our interpretation and understanding of different texts and types of talk. An analysis of spoken language might focus on these aspects plus turn-taking practices, opening and closing sequences of social encounters, or narrative structures, while a discourse analysis of written texts might include a study of topic development and cohesion across sentences. 　　According to Halliday, cohesion occurs where the interpretation of some element in the discourse is dependent on that of another. The one presupposes the other, in the sense that it cannot be effectively decoded except by recourse to it. When this happens, a relation of cohesion is set up, and the two elements, the presupposing and the presupposed, are thereby at least potentially integrated into a text. It is assumed that cohesion is expressed partly through the grammar and partly through the vocabulary. Thus cohesion involves grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.
