To become an instructional technologist, a person can take many roads: via engineering and science, through positive experiences with the media, as a result of an interest in audiovisual or computer technologies, or even through natural evolution as a teacher seeking new ways to enhance learning. Regardless of origins, educational and training backgrounds and present position, there are certain characteristics which unite all those who call themselves instructional technologists. These are a profound conviction that instruction can become a science and that every human being can learn in a predictable manner given the appropriate set of conditions; a desire to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching - learning process; adherence to systematic procedures for the design of instruction; an openness toward all possible technologies that can contribute to learning, clearly defined, observable, and measurable. Simulation gaming is an area of activity which has begun to be taken more and more seriously in educational and training circles. Excellent publications and sources of simulation game design abound. Is there a pony in it for institutional technologists? That is the question this article attempts to answer. The article presents some basic concepts of simulation gaming and then goes on to deal with the many ways simulation gaming can be used to improve human performance. It is addressed to instructional technologists and returns to the characteristics of this group at the end to show how the technology of simulation gaming is relevant to this professional group. What is Simulation Game? The literature on simulation gaming is replete with definitions, explanations and positions as to what constitutes a simulation and a game. Many of the writings are
