以泛珠江三角洲为例研究中国都市圈的整合与协调 Integration and Co-ordination of Metropolitan Areas in China: A Case Study of Greater Pearl River Delta 以泛珠江三角洲为例研究中国都市圈的整合与协调 彭慧 英国伦敦大学学院，发展规划中心 Abstract: In the early 1990s, China started a large scale construction of urban areas1. China’s urbanization got into the fast development stage. Stepped into the new millennium, the development of China’s urbanization was in a remarkable speed. Accompany with its rapid urbanization and socio-economic development, China formed several metropolitan areas which took up large proportion of population in urban areas, and made great contribution to GDP growth, they were dynamics of China’s socio-economic growth. This paper is going to present the status of development of metropolitan areas in China; taking Greater Pearl Delta as case study, analyses the complexity, diversity and the power relation of metro areas; to illustrate the existing problems, pressures, and the challenges. In addition, the paper will present the possibilities and necessity of spatial planning and co-ordination in management approaches. Then it will give some examples showing that how spatial planning and co-ordination solve the problems which metropolitan areas are facing. Eventually, the paper will try to pose some co-ordination strategies for the sustainable development of metropolitan areas. China’s urbanization got into the fast development stage. Stepped into the new millennium, the development of China’s urbanization was in a remarkable speed. “At the end of 2008, there were 655 cities in total, 176 cities more that the year 1991, an annual increase of 11 cities. There were over 593 million populations in urban areas, 90.3% more than 1991. The urbanization rate climbed up to 45.68%.” (National Bureau of Statistic of China, 2009) Accompany with its rapid urbanization
