University of Central Florida The Global War on Terrorand Service Members Began following the attacks on September 11, 2001 Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) Operation New Dawn (OND) Since 2001 and as a result of OIF/OEF/OND 2 million service members have been deployed 4,500 have lost their lives 30,000 have been wounded (Department of Defense, Defense Casualty Analysis System, as of June 29, 2012) The Global War on Terrorand Service Members Mental-health related problems are also common in returning service-members 20% of OIF/OEF veterans experience Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Depression Alcohol/Substance abuse Veteran suicide rates reached an all-time high in September, 2011 (Cohen et al., 2010; Harrell Berglass, 2011; Ramchand et al., 2010; Schnurr et al., 2010; Seal et al., 2009; 2010) The Global War on Terrorand Families of Service Members Military deployment also affects the families of those service members Among active duty troops 815,354 have family responsibilities 613,997 have children Among reserve troops 660,000 have children Among children of service members 700,000 have a parent who is deployed currently (Johnson et al., 2007) Challenges present when a parent is deployed Lengthy and multiple separations Frequent relocations Upheaval of family routines Role changes within the family Threat of harm or death befalling a loved one Challenges also arise when the parent returns home Coping with physical and/or psychological disability Re-negotiation of family roles/ responsibilities Financial hardships The Global War on Terrorand Families of Service Members In recognizing these challenges, questions have been raised regarding the well-being of military families The most commonly studied area of research is: Do these challenges resul
