This part of the performance ethic formula is comprised of two parts: First, senior managers commonly use three coordination and control “levers” to “intervene” and to run their businesses. While all three levers are typically used at all companies, we have found that managers tend to focus a disproportionate amount of energy and attention on one or two. These three areas are people-intensive focus/processes, financial control and planning processes, and operations control and planning processes. Second, senior managers focus across three areas as a way to motivate their executives. These areas, or motivation “levers,” include incentives, opportunities, and values and beliefs. Routine, acceptable execution against these levers is common practice. In many cases, however, some companies have taken elements of these management levers and driven them to superior or best-practice execution. And in a few select cases, companies have focused almost obsessively in certain areas to drive elements to what we call a distinctive level of execution. Typically what we have found is that because of the energy and intensity required from senior management to achieve this level of execution, there is only one “primary coordinator” and only one “primary motivator,” and the other areas receive less attention and focus.
