The Ruminating RectorThe Season after the Epiphany tends to be ignored. No wonder. It’s sandwiched between Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter. The celebration of the Epiphany has changed through the years but we remember it affectionately with the story of the Wise Men of the East visiting the Christ child as found in Matthew’s Gospel. The word Epiphany simply means the “appearing” of Jesus to the gentile kings. We sing “We Three Kings” and move the Wise Men closer to the crèche. As the Season progresses we also celebrate the youthful Jesus with the Baptism and Presentation of our Lord (sometimes called Candlemas). To be honest, we know very little of Jesus during this time between his infancy and the calling of the apostles. Jesus did not go from a delicate infant to a bearded-man overnight. For parents of teenage sons, it’s heartening to remember that Jesus also went through adolescence. Perhaps this is why this Season tends to be ignored. Interestingly, house blessings are associated with this season. There is the custom of having the parish priest come by and bless home and hearth, regardless if the house is new or old. I’m not sure why house blessings are connected with Epiphany but I suspect it might have something to do with the blessings the Wise Men offered coming to the humble home of Christ. Imagine if an Ivy League professor, a CEO, and a politician came to give homage at a cattle trough. That would be something to see: modern day Magi.Magi is the old word we use for the Three Wise Men. Many of us in school were obligated to read O. Henry’s classic tale of ironic giving, “The Gift of the Magi.” Without spoiling the ending, the story revolves around a couple searching out the perfect Christmas gifts for each other. What can be shared is that the couple makes great sacrifices for each other and as silly as it sounds, their selfless giving is like that of the Magi. Selfless giving.
