Grade Level: Six Unit: Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day”/ Venus Research Lesson: Day One/ “All Summer in a Day”/ Identifying the Sci-Fi genre State Indicators and Outcomes: 3.A.3.a Students will use structural features to distinguish among types of narrative text. 1.E.4.b Students will identify and explain information directly stated in the text. Technology Outcomes: Students will not be using technology during Lesson One. Performance Objectives: Students will identify elements of the science fiction genre. Students will find specific examples of science fiction elements using the story “All Summer in a Day.” Students will answer reading comprehension questions. Resources Needed: McDougal Littell anthology (The Language of Literature, 6th grade, 2004) copies of the reading comprehension worksheets (adapted from the Holt Anthology of Science Fiction) Directions for Instruction: Readiness Activity – In cooperative groups, students will discuss and list differences between the genres of fiction and science fiction. Following discussion, instructor will lead a whole-class review of the genre. The class will work as a group to compile a list of science fiction elements. Procedures Following the readiness activity, students will read the selection “All Summer in a Day.” Students will be allowed approximately 15 minutes to read the selection. In partners, students review the story. Each will identify two sci-fi elements from the text. The worksheets that students are completing will be collected at the end of the period. During the last 10 – 15 minutes of class, students will work independently to answer the first two comprehension questions. If they finish early, they may continue working on other questions. Wrap-up: quick review of science fiction elements. Links to Prior Knowledge – Students use their prior knowledge of literary genres to differentiate between fiction and science fiction. Assessment – Students’ partner activities and comprehension questions will
