ABSTRACTHiddenfailureofrelayprotectionisoneoftheculpritscausingthelarge-scalepoweroutages.Althoughtheprobabilityofsuchincidentsislittle,theyareofgreatharm.Theeventwilltriggeracascadingreactionofpowersystemandspreadrapidlyonceitoccurs,ultimatelyleadtothecollapseofpowersystem,andbringaboutdisastrousconsequences.Astheinterconnectedsystemcapacityincreasesandvoltageratingimproved,hiddenfailuresofrelayprotectionwilljeopardizethesafetyofpowersystemmoreandmore.Therefore,assessmentandanalysisofhiddenfailuresareofgreattheoreticalandpracticalsignificancetoguaranteethesafeoperationofpowersystem.Creatinghiddenfailuremonitoringandcontrolsystemisaneffectivewaytopreventhiddenfailures,andistechnicaltrendoftheworld.Asanintelligentautomationdevicemonitoringsecurityoperationofthepowersystem,faultrecorderrecordsthebehavioroftherelayandautomaticdevice,andwiththerecordedwaveformanddata,deficienciesofrelayandautomaticdevicewillbefoundpromptly,whichisofgreatsignificancefortheachievementofhiddenfailuremonitoringsystem.However,faultrecorderdoesnotstartwave-recordingexceptintheeventofpowersystemlargedisturbance.Inordertoprovidemorecompleteandvaluablefielddatafortheresearchofhiddenfailures,thispaperalsostudiestherecordsofpowersystemdisturbances.Thispaperreviewstheresearchstatesofrelayprotection,hiddenfailuresandfaultrecorderathomeandabroad,focusesonseveralkeyissuessuchastheprobabilityofhiddenfailuresincorrectlineremovalandthecriterionofstartingdisturbancerecording.Mainresearchworkandtheresultsobtainedareasfollows:①Bysearchingseveraltypicalcasesofbigblackout,thefactthatmuchpoweroutagesisduetotheincorrectactionsofprotectionsystemsispointedout,andrelevantknowledgeandresearchtheoriesofhiddenfaultareintroduced.②Theregionsofvulnerabilityofhiddenfailuresaredefinedbyanalyzingtheactionmechanismofthehiddenfailuresinprotectionequipment.Andprobabilisticmodel,forhiddenfailuresincorrectlineremoval,isestablishedbyutilizingthecalculationofthehiddenfailuresprobabilitiesofprotectionequipmentsandthefaultprobabili
