The research of BIM in our country started in 2003. Along with some successful practice cases, wealth of practical experience has been accumulated, while at the same time many problems were exposed during the process of practice. Compared to the whole life cycle of a building, the phase of architectural design is just a very short time, but it affects the most far-reaching. Throughout the entire construction project, although the costs in the design stage only take up about 2 to 5% of the total investment, its influence is more than 75% of the construction project. This is because the information of the entire construction project mostly generated in design stage, the quality of design not only affects the construction but also affects the use of the building. Therefore, the key advantage of BIM is to apply it in the design phase. This paper mainly focuses on four parts of the application of BIM in the architectural design phase: the first part briefly summarizes the concept of building information model and its development process, research actuality, and the related software the second part analysis the influence of BIM on traditional architectural design from three perspectives: the process of architectural design, design methods, and spatial thinking mode; third part focuses on the method and process of BIM application in every stage of the design phase; the forth part is a detail analysis of the reason that hinders the development of BIM application in our country, and the main application strategy for architectural design enterprise. The purpose of this paper is to inspire more criticism and thinking from architects, to promote the architects understanding of BIM application in design phase, to speed up the promotion of BIM application,
