A JSA is used to examine a task step-by-step, identify hazards associated with each step, and specify safety precautions to eliminate or reduce the hazards. Simply put, it is a step-by-step analysis of a task.” “To do this, people who are experienced in the task observe the job in progress and identify the hazards. Then, they identify safeguards and solutions so the hazards are controlled.” “There may be many ways to do one job. But, when people with experience study a job in a JSA … they can find the safest way of doing it.” “A JSA is a three-step process. 1. Divide the job into observable steps; 2. Identify the potential hazards associated with each step; and 3. Specify control measures.” “The final step in the JSA is to specify control measures.” “A control measure is specific to the potential hazard identified; several measures may be warranted per hazard.” “Remember, if there are no potential hazards, then no control measures are needed.” “When listing a control measure, be specific. DO NOT use words like ‘Use Caution’ or ‘Be Careful.’ Use simple direct statements, such as ‘Keep hand out of pinch point’ or ‘Do not force tool.’” “And make sure you list the action that needs to be taken so that it will be useful to workers doing the job for the first time.” “Let’
