What is Drama and Why Does it Need to be a Part of Learning? You can call it *Action or Enactment Strategies too. *From: Action Strategies for Deepening Comprehension by Jeffrey Wilhelm (2002) Definitions Story drama: Improvised role play stimulated by a story - David Booth Enactments or Action strategies: Created situations from texts or events in which we “imagine to learn” – Jeffrey Wilhelm * Some Things to Consider Enactments do not require props, stages, rehearsals or acting skills Drama can be used in any curriculum area An enactment can be cast in the past, present or future Students imagine together, actively depict characters, forces, or ideas and interact in these roles * Some More to Ponder Enactment strategies are powerful tools! They motivate and assist learners, particularly “at risk” and reluctant learners to become more engaged and competent readers and learners * I want to help young people know who and where they are, but I also want them to share what other people know, what work they do, what wonders people have already created in science, culture, and the arts. I want students to explore learning through doing but also through reflection and hard study. I want them to learn hard skills in soft ways. Most of all, I want my students, wherever I teach to feel part of a compassionate learning community where they are honored as individuals, where they respect each other, and where they respect and love learning itself.
