The East Market Venus In Qufu Normal University, you are likely to see large crowds of people walking eastwards during 5pm to 7pm every afternoon, on one own or with friends. However, no distinct gateway is in sight. I suppose the east school gate of Qufu Normal University may be the plainest school gate among university ones. As soon as people’s stepping out of the east gate, a variety of commodities come into sight, magazines and notebooks on the left and lovely decorations like hairpins and strings on the other side, all cheap and attractive. Walking past the small amount of commodities, you’d see a street in front, cars and buses driving through, tricycles waiting for passengers aside the roads. Cross the street and you are now in the main east market. The dealers selling meals are at the very entrance of the market as it is pretty convenient for students to buy take-away food, which contains potato pie, Chinese hamburger, sweet corns (remember if the corn is so sweet, it must be put in some cyclamate, which is bad for one’s health), sweet sauce bread, grain pancakes, sushi, bean milk (of great nutrition), juice and so forth, all food cheap but not clean enough. Dealers selling sweet sauce bread are here and there, some are young girls seeming in our same age while some are middle-aged people, gathering and competing together. Among all the take-away food, I prefer grain pancakes most, which tastes really crisp and delicious though dearer than other food comparatively. The pancake maker is a middle-aged aunt, usually wearing a worn apron, having an assistant who seems to be her son or nephew. When someone comes to buy a pancake, the woman would shovel a roll of paste which is grinded by grains onto the stone mill swiftly and spread out counterclockwise, the mill becoming beige immediately covered by paste. Then it turns into golden yellow as the aunt breaks an egg onto it. When the egg gets ripe, it is time to shovel the thin pancake and reverse it wholly.
