THIS work wasoriginallymeant to be a continuation of the series quot;Electromagnetic Induction and its Propagation,quot; publishedin The Electrician in1885-6-7,but left unfinished. Owing, however, to the necessity of much introductory repetition, thisplanwas at once found to beimpracticable, andwas, by request, greatlymodified. The result is some- thing approachinga connected treatise on electricaltheory, thoughwithout the strictformality usuallyassociated with a treatise. As critics cannotalwaysfind time to read more than thepreface,thefollowingremarksmayserve to direct their attention to some of theleading pointsin this volume. The firstchapter will, I believe, be foundeasy to read, andmay perhapsbe useful tomanymen who are accustomed to show thattheyarepractical by exhibitingtheirignorance of the realmeaningof scientific and mathematical methods ofenquiry. The secondchapter, pp.20 to 131, consists of an outline scheme of the fundamentals ofelectromagnetic theoryfrom theFaraday-Maxwell pointofview,with some small modifi- cations and extensionsuponMaxwell’sequations. It is done in terms ofmyrationalunits,which furnish theonly wayot carryingout the idea of lines and tubes of force in a con- sistent and intelligible manner. It is also donemainlyin terms ofvectors, for the sufficient reason that vectors are the main subject of investigation.
