The Tangshan earthquake of July 28,1976 is one of the largest earthquakes to hit the modern world, in terms of the loss of life. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Tangshan in Hebei, China, an industrial city with about one million inhabitants. The earthquake left 242,419 people dead, according to official figures, though some sources offer much higher estimate. A further 164,518 people were recorded as being severely injured. San Francisco T: San Francisco lies in northern California and is surrounded on three sides by water. At 5:13 on the morning of April 18th, 1906, the city was shaken by a terrible earthquake.
