李白杜甫登高望遠詩研究 A STUDY ON “CLIMBING TO A HEIGHT” POEMS BY LI BO(701-762) AND DU FU(712-770) Cheung Hon-ching 張漢青 For the Degree of Master of Philosophy University of Hong Kong February 1999 Abstract of thesis entitled “ A study on ‘Climbing to a Height’ poems by Li Bo(701-762) and Du Fu(712-770) ” submitted by Cheung Hon-ching for the degree of Master of Philosophy at University of Hong Kong in February 1999 . A study on “Climbing to a Height” poems by Li Bo(701-762) and Du Fu(712-770) Cheung Hon-ching Chinese people have a long history of climbing up to the heights which enables them to have a panoramic view of the surrounding. When Confucius climbed up a mountain with his students , he advocated that the genteel should write poems when climbing hills. Since then the scholars had inherited the tradition to compose poetry about hills climbing which eventually became a popular topic of research on Chinese Literature. Li Bo and Du Fu, the two giants of Tang Poetry, were gifted poets born in Tang Dynasty . They had experienced the golden age and the decline of the dynasty from its prime. Both had travelled widely among famous historic spots , high hills and mountains, to escape from wars or on study trips or for leisure . They climbed over mountains, visited numerous pagodas or stood on city walls overlooking the landscape around which inspired them to write poems on various themes . They carefully selected the elements of the natural world to convey their personal feelings and
