[英语]Unit 2第一课时

Unit 2 Unit 2 An Unusual Architect -- Ieoh Ming Pei Discussion Who is Ieoh Ming Pei? When and where did he study architecture? Can you describe some of his most famous projects? Ieoh Ming Pei, the Chinese-born American architect is known as the last master of high modernist architecture. He is good at working with abstract forms, and using materials such as stone, concrete, glass and steel. He is also considered one of the most successful Asian architects of the 20th century. At the age of 17, Ieoh Ming Pei moved to the United States and studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. In the late 1940s, Pei started his career as an architect. Although he was born and raised in China, he tried to abandon the impact of Chinese factors while designing abroad. The Chinese life certainly has had some impact on my designing, but its not that obvious. When Im designing buildings for the United States, I take into consideration the American life and environment and in France, I think about French elements. In the 1970s, Ieoh Ming Pei was widely recognized in America because of his design of the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. However, the John F. Kennedy Library, finished in 1979, was the one that helped Pei become known as one of the worlds top architects. In 1983, Pei was honored with the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is considered to be the Nobel Prize of Architecture. The museum was designed with the concept of Chinese style with innovation, Suzhou style with creativity. Pei recreated another fascinating garden from his early life experiences in Suzhou. He skillfully used metal sunscreens with wooden panels to achieve good lighting effects. Simple geometric forms from modern art are delicately combined with exquisite structural layouts throughout the museum. architect 建筑师 architecture 建筑学;建筑术 architectural 建筑学的;建筑方面的 prolific (正式用语)多产的;大量生产的 多产的作家 a prolific writer inc
