A Day in a Tibetan Nomadic Village Yagla is the biggest nomadic village I have seen in northern Tibet. It lies in Sog County, about one kilometer away from the downtown of Sog. This village is situated on flat terrain by the mountainside, adjacent to Sogchu River. A suspension bridge links the two river banks and further extends into abundant grazing lands skirted with flourishing grass and spotted by countless flocks of yaks, goats, and sheep. The whole village has over 100 households, mainly living off animal husbandry. Apart from the several ancient towers, the residential houses are, by large and large, bungalows of wood and clay. To the south, a Buddhist monastery circled by a sulfur-colored wall sits on a small stone hill. As steep precipices surround the monastery, only a zigzagging mountain path leads the way to the rest of the world. This spectacular landscape is remembered in legend as the hometown of Drumo, a concubine of King Gesar, as well as a place well known for famous beauties. Visitors always admire the good complexion of the people living here and comment that local girls are beautiful and the men are handsome. However its fame was due not only to the beauty of the land and its people, but the village is also steeped in a rich history. Today the village is a reflection in miniature of the lives and customs of nomadic Tibetans. Since it is not a local custom to dig a well in the village compound, it is rare to see a single well in the village. Generally, nomadic Tibetans obtain all their water from either rivers or nearby springs. They prefer to collect the water; therefore, early every morning those morning birds, boys and girls, one after the other, sweep down the mountain to collect river water. Frolicking and singing amongst them in the process of fetching water is therefore part of their daily life. Together with the cooking smoke wafting from individual houses, the village lanes are filled with the adorable aroma of yak-butte
