SOLIDWORKS 98PLUS mechanical SolidWorks95, the features-based 3D solid modeling package from SolidWorks Corp. (a Dassault Systemes Company), took the CAD world by storm when it was released three years ago. The latest release, SolidWorks 98Plus, is the sixth major release in three years, and it is humongous. It features more than 200 major enhancements and innovations, including user interface improvements and assembly design, surfacing, detailing, and sheet metal design capabilities. Most were customer-driven. Many of the new features are exclusive to SolidWorks and are not avail able with any other solid modeler in its class. SolidWorks has received more awards and accolades than any other solid modeler in the industry. Is it justified? If you are thinking of migrating to a solid modeler, is it for you? This article provides details about the major enhancements that most of the competition simply does not have. Assembly Enhancements Smart Mate. Assembly mode has become much stronger with Snap-to-Fit Smart Mate, which automatically infers mating conditions so parts mate automatically in the assembly. In all other systems, you must invoke numerous commands and perform multiple steps to align new parts in an assembly. With SolidWorks, you simply drag a part near a new part, and it smarts to a logical location. Drag a feature (edge, vertex, or face of an open component part) into the active assembly window. The geometry selected is positioned on the geometry in the active assembly. As the part being dragged comes close to a specific alignment, it snaps into position. If that is not the desired alignment, a tab allows you to flip the alignment until the correct position is found. No mates are created until the component is dropped, that is, until you release the mouse button. To try out Smart Mate, I placed a flange on the end of a piece of pipe.
