Browning received scant formal education. However, his father encouraged him to read and he had access to his large (6,000 vols) library. In 1846 Browning eloped with Elizabeth Barrett (1806-1861), with her greatest work , the Sonnets from the Portuguese, whose poetic reputation was then far greater than his and the couple settled in Florence (One of Browning’s most perfect poems, One Word More《还有一句》, is addressed to his wife.). He produced comparatively little poetry during the next 15 years. When Elizabeth Browning died in 1861, he moved to London with his son Robert Barrett Browning (1849-1912). There he wrote his greatest work, THE RING AND THE BOOK (1869) （《指环与书》）， Robert Browning died on December 12, 1889 in Venice in his sons house. Various difficulties made the poet’s requested burial in Florence impossible, thus his body was returned to England and was buried at poets’ corner at Westminster Abbey . In his dramatic monologues, he penetrates to the depth the psychology of his characters and through their own speeches, he analyzes and dissects his characters and reveals the innermost secret of their lives.
